Strong in the Lord

Earlier I wrote about the way Bible-believing, God-honouring, obedient servants of the Lord Jesus Christ are empowered by the Holy Ghost to accomplish godliness. They learn what the Bible teaches knowing that their instruction comes from the Lord God Himself. They need not rely on the traditions or philosophies of men. While the Holy Ghost indwells all true Christians, we sometimes forget the magnitude of the power that we wield as a result of our heavenly citizenship. Let’s look at this incredible truth a bit closer!

The weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but spiritual. They are “mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds” (2 Cor. 10:4). This means that we cannot and must not rely on mankind (either on our own flesh or on that of any other’s) to do that which the Holy Spirit has been given to us to do for us.

Our flesh is carnal; it is fallen, it is weak, it is unreliable, and it is prone to vanity and deception. Paul refers to this, our flesh, as our “earthly house” in which we “groan, being burdened” (2 Cor. 5:1-4). Our hope lies in the following truth: our earthly house will one day be exchanged for “our house which is from heaven” (vs. 2). This will be ours in the regeneration. While we remain here in the flesh, we are to “labour, that, whether present or absent [from God], we may be accepted of him” (vs. 9). By what power do we labour?

We labour by the power of the Holy Ghost for the glory of God. This labour is not in vain. “It is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure” (Phil. 2:13). God has given us “the earnest of the Spirit. Therefore we are always confident” (2 Cor. 5:5).

Remember this confidence that you have in the Lord. If you are burdened by sin, by mistakes, by a shameful past, or by doubt – stop. Cease the self-recrimination and choose this day to “be strong in the Lord and in the power of his might” (Eph. 6:10). "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new" (2 Cor. 5:17).

Remember that you are "renewed in the spirit of your mind" (Eph. 4:23). You are to "put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness" (Eph. 4:24).

God said, "Be ye holy; for I am holy" (1 Pet. 1:16). He wouldn't say it if it couldn't be done.
