First, let’s see how this phrase is used in the Bible:
“The pangs of hell came round about me: the snares of death prevented me” (Psalm 18:5 LXX, cross referenced in 2 Samuel 22:6 LXX).
“The commandment of the Lord is a fountain of life; and it causes men to turn aside from the snare of death” (Proverbs 14:27 LXX).
“…that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil…” (2 Timothy 2:26).
Snares are the devices of Satan that are set in this world to trap people in sin. They are beguiling, enticing, and tempting. They appeal to our vanities and to our egos. They are the works of the flesh (Galatians 5:17). If left unchecked, they cause a numb spiritual life, further ungodliness, guilt-ridden living, and the nagging possibility that the entrapped person may not be saved. They can and must be purged from a Christian’s life so that she can become fruitful.
The first thing we need to do to free ourselves from the snare of the devil is to humbly receive instruction. If we accept godly instruction, we will be shown the truth (2 Timothy 2:25). The truth will then set us free. The trick is to accept it, no matter how painful it may at first be, then come to a Biblical understanding of it, and finally, we must logically and emotionally apply that truth to our lives. God is faithful to provide us with His Holy Spirit, which will shield us from mistruth and guide us into His truth.
Remember, the devil is a roaring lion on the hunt for weak prey. Strengthen yourselves with the Word of God by knowing it so well that you will be immune to the deceitfulness of this world. "...be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might" (Ephesians 6:10)!
